Assessing data and analysis

Roles that turn a messy dataset into a recommendation someone else is willing to act on.

Analytical roles are spread across three of the BLS major groups — business and financial operations, computer and mathematical, and management — which makes the family easy to undercount if you look at any single occupation. Taken together it is one of the strongest growth stories in the projections: data scientists at 35 percent and 95,400 net new jobs, management analysts at 10 percent and 109,200 net new jobs, market research analysts adding 82,000 openings a year, operations research analysts at 12 percent. These are not replacement-driven categories. Employers are creating positions, which means they are hiring people into jobs the organisation has not done before and has no internal benchmark for.

The failure mode this family is famous for is a technically correct analysis that changes nothing. The distribution of skill is not really in the SQL or the model — it is in problem framing (did they answer the question that was asked, or the question that was easy to answer with the data provided), in noticing that a field is corrupted rather than quietly filtering it, in stating an effect size alongside its uncertainty, and in surviving a stakeholder who says "that can't be right" without either folding or digging in. Analysts who cannot do the last part end up producing dashboards nobody opens, and the hiring manager discovers it about five months in.

Screening for this family has drifted toward take-home exercises, which are unbounded in time, unmonitored, and now trivially outsourceable to a model. The alternative is not to make the task harder; it is to make the work observable and then interrogate it. A monitored, time-boxed task over a deliberately imperfect dataset — a duplicated join key, an outlier that is real, a column whose definition changed mid-period — produces a ranked artefact, and a short spoken readout to an AI stakeholder who challenges the conclusion shows whether the candidate actually understands what they built. A caveat worth stating to any buyer: this design measures analytical judgment on a small, clean-ish problem in under an hour. It does not measure whether someone can carry a six-month data platform migration, and no simulation should be sold as if it does.

Why this work can be assessed

Both halves of the job are producible remotely — the analysis itself in a sandbox or spreadsheet task, and the recommendation as a written brief or a spoken readout to an AI stakeholder who pushes back.
