Assessing enterprise and complex sales

Long-cycle B2B selling into a committee, where a single mis-hire costs a territory for a year.

Enterprise selling is the one commercial family where the assessment cost is never the objection, because the alternative is so expensive. A rep who does not work out occupies a territory through a 6.2-month ramp before anyone can be sure, and the base rate is not encouraging: fewer than half of AEs in the 2026 Bridge Group cohort hit quota. Hiring managers know this, which is why the same research shows required experience at hire climbing to 3.7 years from 2.7 in 2022. That climb is the tell. Buyers are not suddenly convinced that year four makes someone better; they are using tenure as a proxy because they have no direct evidence of skill, and proxies are what you reach for when the signal is missing.

What actually separates the top quartile is close to the opposite of what interviews reward. It is discovery that changes the deal rather than confirming the pitch — asking the question that surfaces the constraint the buyer was not going to mention, whether that is a committed budget, an incumbent contract with six months left, or the fact that the person on the call cannot sign. It is multithreading rather than falling in love with a single friendly champion. It is disqualifying early, which every sales leader claims to want and every commission plan punishes. And it is forecasting honestly, because a rep who calls deals correctly is worth more to a CRO than a rep with the same number who is unpredictable about it. Note too that the boundary with post-sale is dissolving — 38 percent of AEs in that cohort now have sole or blended ownership of renewal and expansion — so the account plan is part of the job, not an afterthought.

The status quo is a CV of logos and unverifiable attainment percentages, backed by reference calls to people the candidate chose, plus a mock pitch. The mock pitch is the weakest step of all, because it tests presentation while the job turns on questioning; the best enterprise reps are frequently unremarkable at pitching and exceptional at the four minutes after the buyer says "we already have something for that." A simulated buyer carrying a hidden, specific constraint separates the charming candidate from the effective one within one call, because charm stops working the moment agreeableness is not the path forward. The written follow-up is the second half of the evidence and often the more damning: it shows whether they heard what the buyer said or what they wanted the buyer to have said, and whether the note is something the buyer could forward to their own boss without editing it.

Why this work can be assessed

The decisive moment is a discovery call in which the buyer is guarding a constraint they have not volunteered — plus the written follow-up and account plan that come out of it. All three are stageable in full.
