Assessing supply chain, procurement and logistics coordination
Roles that plan, buy and move things — purchasing, demand and production planning, inventory control, freight and dispatch coordination.
This family plans and executes the physical and contractual flow of goods: buyers and procurement specialists who select suppliers and place orders, planners who decide what gets made or ordered and when, inventory analysts who decide what to hold, and logistics and dispatch coordinators who decide what moves on which truck when the plan breaks. It is one of the few back-office families where BLS projects strong growth rather than decline — logisticians at eighteen percent over 2025-35 — while the clerical layer beneath it shrinks, which means employers are hiring more people into the judgment-heavy end of the same work.
The hiring pain is that this is a role where the right answer is a trade-off and the candidate has to be able to defend the one they picked. There is no shipment plan that is simply correct: expediting the late order satisfies the customer, blows the freight budget and takes capacity from another line. A good planner holds three constraints at once, picks the option with the lowest total damage, and tells the affected parties before they find out. A bad one optimises the constraint they were most recently shouted about. The distinguishing skill is quantitative but not mathematical — the arithmetic is trivial, the difficulty is deciding which numbers matter and being able to say why in front of someone who disagrees.
That has a second half that most families do not have: the trade-off is immediately followed by a conversation. The buyer who has calculated that a supplier's price increase is unjustified then has to say so to the supplier without losing the relationship or the allocation. The dispatch coordinator who has decided the customer's order slips has to make that call. These are people who work a spreadsheet and then work a phone, and performance in one predicts almost nothing about the other — which is why assessing this family properly needs both a data task and a live call, and why a candidate who is excellent at only one of them is a genuinely different hire from a candidate who is tolerable at both.
Current screening is a CV read for ERP system names and industry, an interview, and, in the better processes, a case discussion where the candidate talks through a hypothetical. The case discussion is closer than most families get, but it is still narration: the candidate describes what they would do rather than doing it, and the interviewer, who already knows the answer they have in mind, tends to lead. It also systematically over-rewards people who have worked in the same sector on the same system, because sector fluency is the only thing the conversation reliably surfaces. A live simulation in which the candidate is given real constraint data, has to choose, and then has to hold that choice against an AI supplier pushing back, separates the person who can defend a decision from the person who can only describe one.
Why this work can be assessed
The core task is a constrained trade-off made on a spreadsheet and then negotiated with a supplier or a site, which a data task plus a live supplier call reproduces end to end.
