Job family
Assessing sales and revenue
Roles that open, qualify and close revenue by conversation and written follow-up.
This family is the remote-sellable part of a very large occupational group: inside sales, business development, account management, B2B field sales and licensed insurance and financial sales. The published numbers make two things clear. First, the volume is real but largely flat — BLS projects wholesale and manufacturing sales representatives at zero percent growth to 2035 while still generating about 123,400 openings a year, which is the signature of an occupation with heavy turnover. Second, the hiring is concentrated in exactly the roles where the work happens down a phone line and in a CRM, which is the part a simulation can reproduce honestly. In-store retail floor work, despite being the single biggest block of jobs in the group, is deliberately out of scope here.
Sales is also the family where the interview is least predictive, for a structural reason: the interview rewards the same surface skill the job rewards — being persuasive in conversation — so a strong interviewer looks like a strong seller regardless of whether they are one. What actually separates quota attainment is less charismatic and more boring: qualifying out early rather than nursing a dead deal to keep the pipeline looking full, asking the question that surfaces the real objection instead of handling the stated one, knowing what a discount costs, and writing a follow-up email that a buyer can forward to their own boss without editing. Hiring managers routinely discover these gaps only after a full quarter of ramp.
A simulated discovery or objection-handling call with an AI buyer who has a hidden real constraint — the budget is committed, the incumbent contract has six months left, the actual decision-maker is not on the call — separates the two profiles quickly, because the charming candidate and the effective candidate diverge as soon as agreeableness stops working. The written follow-up is the second half and matters as much: it shows whether they heard what was said or what they wanted to hear. Two constraints worth being explicit about with any buyer. Assess the selling, never the accent, dialect or manner of speech — those are protected-characteristic proxies and have no place in the mark scheme. And where a licence is a legal prerequisite, as it is for the 572,600 US insurance sales agents, treat licensure as an employer-verified gate outside the assessment; a simulation ranks selling ability, it does not verify credentials.
Why this work can be assessed
Remote and inside sales is conducted entirely by call and email, so a live simulated buyer plus the follow-up the candidate sends afterwards is the job rather than a proxy for it.
These roles hire on different signals
Each of these is assessed differently. An assessment that treats them as one job measures whichever of them it was designed for.
